The term “Palestine” in the acronym of the United Nations Agency refers to the areas formerly under British Mandate (also known as “historic Palestine”), which included the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and the territories that became the State of Israel. Until 1952, UNRWA catered also to the needs of the Jewish communities displaced during the 1948 war.
