EXP: entité vers laquelle on peut se tourner pour obtenir des fonds en urgence, après avoir épuisé toutes les autres possibilités; les banques, par ex., sollicitent leur prêteur ultime lorsqu’elles ne peuvent pas se procurer les fonds nécessaires à la conduite de leurs activités quotidiennes; cela peut se produire en période de turbulences financières, lorsque les banques hésitent à se prêter entre elles ou quand de nombreux déposants souhaitent retirer leur argent de leur compte bancaire au même moment; dans ce type de situations, les banques centrales agissent en qualité de prêteur ultime; en Suisse, ce rôle est assumé par la Banque nationale suisse
